Files Within Images

Friday, 5 June 2009 03:04 by hagermanr

I may be a little behind the times here but I was watching “Along Came a Spider” today with Morgan Freeman. The general basis of the movie without giving it away is, a hostage negotiator (Morgan Freeman) gets his female partner killed in a sting gone bad. Now months later, bad guy kidnaps senators daughter and drags Morgan into the investigation.

Long story short, they find that the girl along with all her classmates, are passing notes in class using a technology where they hide the text inside gif images. So I got to thinking about that. I can create a PGP encrypted file and email it out. You intercept it and your curiosity goes nuts because you know it is an encrypted document and if I spent all that time and effort to encrypt it, well, it must be good!

What if I could hide that same information inside an image? I could post it on the internet if I wanted and you wouldn’t be the wiser.

Now, I know it’s been around since 2002 at least, but I thought it was kind of cool.

Here are two images. Image 1 is the original. Image 2 has a hidden text document inside. Visit http://sourceforge.net/projects/hide-in-picture/ and download the app to see the file.

Image 1 is just a couple dozen bytes smaller than image 2. That should be your first clue. To see the text file, the password is, password.
